Group of Mehters
The Mehter was the military marching band of the Janissaries.
The Janissaries were special soldiers of the Ottoman army. The Mehter began in the 14th century. It became known all over the world for its strong sound and proud rhythm.
In times of war, the Mehter helped the Janissaries feel brave and united. At the palace, the band also played during ceremonies and festivals.
In 1826, the Janissaries were ended. The Mehter was ended with them.
Later, Sultan Abdülmecid wanted a new military band with a more modern sound. He worked with the Italian composer Gaetano Donizetti. Together, they helped create a new band called Musica-i Hümayun. This name means “the Imperial Music.”
Donizetti also composed a march for Sultan Abdülmecid.
Today, the old Mehter tradition is remembered in Istanbul. A Mehter group formed by Istanbul’s Military Museum performs for visitors every Wednesday at Topkapı Palace.
