Fatih Mansion Treasury Room

The Fatih Mansion is one of the oldest buildings in Topkapı Palace.

Its name comes from Mehmed the Conqueror. In Turkish, “Fatih” means “the Conqueror.” He was the sultan who took Constantinople in 1453. A few years later, during his reign, this mansion was built, between 1462 and 1463.

The building has reached our time with four rooms. It also has a terrace with a fountain. There is a cloister, which is a covered walking place. There is also a domed portico, held up by columns on the courtyard side.

At first, the mansion was used as the private place of the sultan. Later, it became a very important treasure house. Valuable goods of the Ottoman dynasty were kept here. Money and jewels were kept here too. So were war spoils and gifts sent by foreign rulers.

Because of this, the mansion was also called the Imperial Treasury, or Hazine-i Hümayun. It was also known as the Enderun Treasury. Enderun means the inner part of the palace.

Today, the Fatih Mansion still keeps this old meaning alive. Its four halls are used for the treasury collection.
