THE FATIH MANSION FIRST HALL
The Fatih Mansion holds some of the great treasures of the Ottoman dynasty.
This first hall tells the story of the palace treasury. This was the place for very precious things. Some were gifts. Some were used by the sultans. Some showed the power and wealth of the empire.
Here, the story begins with objects linked to three famous sultans.
One is Fatih Sultan Mehmed. “Fatih” means “the Conqueror.” He took Constantinople in 1453.
Another is Yavuz Sultan Selim. “Yavuz” means “the Stern.” He is also known as Sultan Selim the First.
The third is Suleiman the Magnificent. He ruled during one of the strongest times of the Ottoman Empire.
The hall also shows the most precious part of the treasury. There are precious stones. There is gold. There are important diamonds from the palace collection.
The most famous of these is the Spoonmaker’s Diamond. It is one of the best-known jewels in Topkapı Palace.
The treasures also tell us about the private life of the sultans. They were not only signs of power. They were also used in daily palace life.
There are jewels with precious stones. There are gold and jade cups. There are cup holders, made to carry small drinking cups. There are dessert cups decorated with diamonds.
There are also jewel-covered boxes. There are mirrors decorated with gold, jade, and precious stones. There are toilet sets, made for personal care.
Together, these objects show a world of fine work, rich materials, and royal taste. They bring us close to the private rooms and special moments of the Ottoman sultans.
