Goblet

This gold goblet once belonged to Shah Ismail.

A goblet is a drinking cup. This one is special. It is covered with fine gold work. Shah Ismail was the ruler of the Safavid state. The Safavids ruled Iran and nearby lands.

Other precious things from him were also taken. There was a belt decorated with gold, turquoise, and rubies. There was also an armband made with three strands.

These objects came to the Ottomans after a great battle. It was the Battle of Chaldiran, in 1514. The Ottomans won against the Safavids there.

So these shining objects are more than rich court treasures. They also tell a story of power, war, and the long struggle between two great states.
