Baghdad Pavilion

The Baghdad Pavilion is a small, beautiful palace building with a big story.

It was built after 1638. It was made in memory of Sultan Murad the Fourth and his Baghdad campaign. Baghdad is a great city in today’s Iraq. For the Ottoman world, this campaign was an important event.

The pavilion is one of the later buildings made in the classical Ottoman imperial style. This means it follows the grand style used for the sultans and their court.

Its dome is very important. In Ottoman buildings, a dome often stands for the whole world. At the center of this dome, there is a round hanger.

The pavilion is also loved for its fine decoration. It has beautiful tiles. It has wardrobes made with mother-of-pearl and tortoise shell. It has decorated window lids and rich dome ornaments.

And from this elegant place, there is a wonderful view of the Golden Horn, the famous waterway of Istanbul.
