Mecidiye Pavilion

The Mecidiye Pavilion is one of the last new buildings added to Topkapı Palace.

It was built in the 1850s, during the rule of Sultan Abdülmecid. He was an Ottoman sultan, and the name of the pavilion comes from his name. This building was the last sultan pavilion built in Topkapı Palace.

By this time, the Ottoman world was meeting Europe in many new ways. You can see this in the style of the building. It feels different from many older parts of the palace.

This change was not only in architecture. It was also in music. Sultan Abdülaziz, another Ottoman sultan, composed music. One of his works was called “Invitation to Waltz.” A waltz is a European dance in three beats.

So this pavilion tells a quiet story of change. It belongs to the old palace, but it also shows a time when new European tastes were entering Ottoman court life.
