View of Marmara

The Sea of Marmara gives Topkapı Palace one of its most beautiful views.

This sea has always been important for Istanbul. It lies between Europe and Asia. It also helps link the Black Sea with the Aegean Sea. For many centuries, ships passed across these waters. They carried people, food, silk, wood, and news from faraway places.

The Ottoman sultans could look out over this sea from the palace. The view reminded them that Istanbul was a great meeting place. Land and sea came together here. So did many peoples and many cultures.

Near this view is the Mecidiye Kiosk. A kiosk is a small palace building. This one was made in the time of Sultan Abdülmecid. He ruled in the 1800s. The Mecidiye Kiosk was one of the last buildings added to Topkapı Palace.

By that time, the Ottoman world was changing. The sultans were using newer palace styles. The Mecidiye Kiosk shows this change. It belongs to the old palace, but its style looks more like the 19th century.

So this place brings two stories together. One is the long story of Topkapı Palace. The other is the wide, shining story of the Sea of Marmara.
