Common Gate Main Entrance

The Common Gate was the entrance to the part of the palace where the women lived.

This area was watched very carefully. Day and night, two black chiefs were on duty here. These men were important palace servants. They guarded the women’s part of the palace, called the Harem.

Three gates were under the constant control of the black chiefs. At night, they even used mirrors to watch the doors. In this way, they could see if anyone came near.

Near this gate, there was also a famous family tree panel. It showed the Ottoman family line. This was important in a palace where family, rank, and duty shaped daily life.

Each gate led to a different part of the Harem. One gate led to the Golden Way. Another gate led to the stone courtyard of the Mother of the Sultan. The Mother of the Sultan was called the Valide Sultan. She was one of the most powerful women in the palace.

Another gate led to the stone courtyard of the concubines and the head wives. The concubines were women who lived and served in the Harem. The head wives had a higher place in palace life.

So this gate was not just a door. It was a guarded border. It stood between the outer palace and the private world of the women of Topkapı Palace.
