Mother of Sultan's Stone Courtyard
This quiet stone courtyard belonged to the mother of the sultan.
She was called the Valide Sultan. This means “the sultan’s mother.” She was one of the most powerful women in the palace. She had her own rooms here. She also had great respect in the harem.
The harem was the private family area of the palace. The sultan’s mother lived here with royal women, children, and servants. It was not only a home. It was also a place with rules, duties, and ranks.
Near the mother’s chamber were the rooms of the princes. These young princes were the sons of the sultan. They lived and learned inside the palace before they became adults.
There was also a room for the head of the wives. She was a high-ranking woman in the harem. She helped with the order of daily life.
Concubines also lived in this part of the palace. Many were trained in music, reading, sewing, and palace manners. Their lives were shaped by the strict world of the harem, under the watch of the women who held power here.
