Ahmed I Private Room

This private room was made for Sultan Ahmet the First.

It was built in 1608. That was 30 years after the private room of Sultan Murad the Third. Murad the Third’s room was the most glamorous room in the palace.

To make this new room, a doorway was opened from Murad the Third’s chamber. So the two rooms were joined.

A fountain is an important part of Ahmet the First’s room. The room also had many drawers and cupboards. Because of this, people called it a library.

Sultan Ahmet the First ruled the Ottoman Empire in the early 1600s. His name is also remembered in Istanbul because of the great Sultan Ahmet Mosque, known to many people as the Blue Mosque. Here in the palace, his private room shows a quieter side of royal life. It was a place made for the sultan’s own use, close to the older and richer room of Murad the Third.
